VCRCD Programs

Through various federal, state and local funding sources, the VCRCD runs several programs out of its Somis office.

CURRENT PROGRAMS AND PROJECTS

Hillside Erosion Control Program

The VCRCD assists in the preparation and review of Hillside Erosion Control Plans on new agricultural developments in critical areas (sloping lands). This service is provided to the County of Ventura as specified in the Ventura County Hillside Erosion Control Ordinance. More information... Back to top.

Calleguas Creek Watershed Streambank Conservation Practice Permit Coordination Program

Water Resources Conservation & Development

Arundo Seed Viability Study

It is generally assumed that arundo does not spread by seed in the United States, but rather relies on vegetative means of reproduction. However a recent study has shown that arundo may indeed be capable of producing viable seeds in the wild! More information... Back to top.

FUTURE PROJECTS

VCRCD Long Range Plan

The VCRCD is planning to produce a comprehensive Long Range Plan which assesses resource conditions, and soil and water conservation needs throughout the County. The multi-year plan then sets forth goals and the programs necessary to achieve adequate resource protection and improvement. Portions of the Long Range Plan will be extracted each year as the basis for the VCRCD's Annual Work Plan. Back to top.

COMPLETED PROJECTS

Upper Santa Clara River Watershed Arundo Tamarisk Removal Plan (SCARP)

The VCRCD has taken the lead to prepare programmatic environmental documentation (CEQA/NEPA) and a long-term implementation plan in order to perform arundo, a.k.a. giant reed (Arundo donax) and tamarisk, a.k.a. salt cedar (Tamarix spp.) removal in the riparian corridors of the upper Santa Clara River Watershed. We have also implemented a site-specific removal project in Santa Clarita on 297 acres. This project was funded by the State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) Proposition 13 Grant. Many agencies and organizations collaborated on this venture. More information... Back to top.

Ventura County Arundo Removal Demonstration Project

The Arundo Task Force and the County of Ventura worked together to demonstrate the need for arundo, a.k.a. giant reed (Arundo donax) removal and to demonstrate removal and revegetation techniques. The project site is located in Casitas Springs adjacent to the Community Center. If you would like more information, please contact Peggy Rose. Back to top.

Calleguas Mulching and Streambank Restoration Program

Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Projects (PL-566)

The VCRCD served as a local sponsor for federally (Natural Resources Conservation Service [NRCS]) funded watershed protection and flood prevention projects in Ventura County.
